I had to laugh when I read the glowing tribute a new 5 Star hotel was paying to its new Chief Concierge.
“He is an expert on making the most of Dubai… He can fluently converse in English, Hindi, Konkani and Malayalam as well as basic Arabic.”
They then went on to say that he is “one of the most experienced concierges in the UAE”.
No doubt all that is true – and I have great respect for the Oberoi Hotel group who run some of the very best hotels. However, anywhere other than Dubai, a hotel would surely want to keep very quiet about the fact that its concierge only had a “basic” grasp of the local language.
